Participation
According to the National Federation of High Schools, the greatest participation by high school athletes is in high school football, with over 1 million boys participating. There are 254,000 seniors who play high school football and only 5,042 athletic scholarships awarded at the D1 level. Being recruited for college ball is extremely competitive, because these statistics make your odds 1-50 that you get a scholarship.
In the NCAA football league (college level), there are 119 schools that compete at the level 1-A division. A small percentage of these players go on to get drafted into the professional league, the NFL. The top five ranked NCAA teams are:
1. Alabama
2. LSU
3. Oklahoma State
4. Oregon
5. USC
Special Equipment
To prevent injuries and maximize performance on the field, football players need to wear and use proper equipment. These items include: a helmet, facemask, shoulder pads, mouth guard, football cleats, and footballs.
Skills
Each position on a football team requires special skills. Players should have good speed, balance, agility, strength, quickness, accuracy, and toughness. Defensive backs need speed to be able to cover receivers. A quarterback needs excellent balance to avoid being sacked. Running backs with agility can be elusive so that tacklers miss. All linemen need strength to be able to block, tackle, and rush the passer. A defensive end needs quickness to get by a blocker and attack the quarterback. Passers and kickers need to be accurate in throwing and kicking the football. Toughness is necessary no matter what position is played. Football players take a physical beating on their bodies throughout the game, so they need to be able to bounce back and recover from each tackle.
