The history of American football can be traced to early versions of rugby and association football in the late 19th century. Beginning in England, American football was started in 1879 when a man named Walter Camp, a player and coach at Yale University instituted new rules to the rugby game. Camp's changes include creating the line of scrimmage, 11 players on a time instead of 15, the scoring system, and the forward pass. These rules were created over a period of approximately 20 years until finally, the NFL, the National Football League, was formed in 1920.
