The shoulder joint is the most frequently dislocated major joint of the body. The dislocation occurs when an impact causes an abduction or extreme rotation and the head of the humerus pops out of the socket. A partial dislocation is called a subluxation. The dislocation can occur in any direction. The pain is often very intense and leads to swelling, numbness, and weakness. Doctors perform a routine physical exam and take an x-ray to rule out a bone fracture.
Called reduction, doctors replace the ball of the humerus back into the joint. The athlete wears a sling or shoulder immobilizer for several weeks to keep the shoulder from moving. Anti-inflammatories and pain meds can be taken for pain relief. After pain and swelling goes down, the athlete starts physical therapy to restore range of motion as well as strength of the muscles in the shoulder.
