Injury Patterns

One study monitored the injury patterns of professional football players over 7 seasons.  Here are their results...
The average player participated in 34 games and had 162 training sessions per season.  In total, 4483 injuries were registered; 2545 (57%) occurred during matches, while 1937 (43%) occurred in training.  On average, a player sustained 2.0 injuries per season.  87% of the injuries affected the lower extremities. Muscle strain, ligament sprain and contusion were the most common injury types.  The most common injury locations were in the thigh, knee, ankle, and hip/groin.  Thigh strain was the single most common injury, representing 17% of all injuries.  16% of the total injuries were considered "severe."

-Between 2001 and 2005, U.S. males of all ages made approximately 1,060,823 emergency room visits with football-related injuries.
-Almost 194,000 children ages five to 14 were treated in hospital emergency rooms for football-related injuries alone.
